In 2011, following the recent death of her husband, Fern (Frances McDormand) finds herself faced with a bleak economic future after the sole industry in her rural Nevada town closes down. Forced out of her job and her home, she decides to cram her memory-laden belongings into an old secondhand van and hits the road to explore a life outside of conventional society. Travelling from town to town, Fern meets other modern-day nomads and kindred spirits, most of whom are played by real people playing fictionalised versions of themselves.
A powerful character study on those that society has forgotten, Nomadland has become the most celebrated film of the year, sweeping up countless awards, including a leading three Oscar wins for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress (McDormand). Chinese director Chloé Zhao – herself the recipient of many history-making awards – has delivered a magical, beautiful and contemplative moviegoing experience with the ever-reliable McDormand at its heart. An absolute must-see.
