In the mid-90s, idealistic Joanna (Margaret Qualley) impulsively quits graduate school and arrives in New York City to pursue her life-long dream of becoming a published writer. Deciding to get her foot in the door, she landed a highly-coveted clerical role at a literary agency as an assistant to the eccentric and old-fashioned Margaret (Sigourney Weaver).
As it turns out, the agency’s most famous client is notoriously reclusive writer J.D. Salinger and Joanna is soon tasked with the menial task of processing the voluminous fan mail that arrives for him on a daily basis. Her strict instructions are to reply with an impersonal, pre-written response – but she can’t help but be affected by some of the more heartfelt correspondence and secretly starts answering them personally, discovering her own voice in the process.
Adapted from Joanna Rakoff’s (possible spoiler alert!) own bestselling memoir, this is the latest film Oscar-nominated writer-director Philippe Falardeau (Monsieur Lazhar), and a wryly funny journey of creative and personal discovery.
