It all begins when San Francisco private eye Sam Spade (Humphrey Bogart) and his partner (Jerome Cowan) are approached by Miss Wonderly (Mary Astor), a gorgeous woman who offers them considerable money in exchange for protection. But Spade soon finds himself hounded by police when his partner is found dead, and Miss Wonderly turns out not to be who she says she is. What follows is a series of murders, corruption and double crosses tied up in a web of mystery with one object at its centre: a priceless, jewel-encrusted statuette known as The Maltese Falcon.
Celebrating its 80th anniversary this year, this film noir classic is widely considered to be the defining film of the genre and one of the greatest films ever made. It launched the careers of both Bogart and director John Huston, who would go on to make such films as The Treasure of the Sierra Madre and The African Queen together. Not to be missed on the big screen!
