After the tragic loss of his young son, psychiatrist Phillip Clark (Casey Affleck) has thrown himself into his work, while his wife (Michelle Monaghan) and teenage daughter (India Eisley) have each found their own ways to cope, some better than others.
In a session with a patient named Daphne (Emily Alyn Lind), Phillip attempts an unorthodox methodology, sharing the story of his own trauma with her in an effort to make her feel less alone. It seems to be working wonders, until Daphne is found dead in an apparent suicide. Phillip and his family are then surprised by an unexpected visitor to their house: Daphne’s older brother James (Sam Claflin), returning a book that his late sister had borrowed. They invite him to stay for dinner, but it’s not long before Phillip realises that James may have a hidden agenda.
Stand out performances from Affleck and particularly Claflin as the cool-but-charming stranger buoy this old-fashioned psychological thriller with more than enough twists and scares.
