Get into the Olympic spirit with this 40th anniversary screening of the 1981 historical drama which won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Original Score for the iconic soundtrack by Vangelis. Based on real-life events, Chariots of Fire tells the story of two men chasing the same goal: a gold medal in the 400-metre race at the 1924 Paris Olympics.
In a stand for his Christian beliefs, Scotsman Eric Liddell (Ian Charleson), had already withdrawn from his best event, the 100-metre, because the heats were held on a Sunday. Winning the 400-metre would be a testament to his faith. For Englishman Harold Abrahams (Ben Cross), however, the win would show the world that Jews are not inferior and gain him the acceptance he desperately desires.
After more Olympic inspiration? Then be sure to cheer on Catriona Bisset, the Canberra-raised current Australian women’s record holder for the 800-metres, as she strives for Tokyo gold in this event.
