The documentary Breaking Bread follows a group of chefs as they take part in the Asham food festival in Haifa, Israel. This unique festival brings together pairs of Arab and Jewish chefs to create each of the dishes. It was founded by Dr. Nof Atamna-Ismaeel, the first Muslim Arab to win Israel's Masterchef contest, in the firm belief that there is no room for politics in the kitchen.
Filmed in English, Breaking Bread is a film about courage and hope, and what can happen when people are united by what they love – which, in this case, is mouth-watering food. It stars a host of delectable Middle Eastern fare such as kishek (a Syrian yogurt soup), qatayef (a dessert typically served during Ramadan), mussakhan (Palestinian roast chicken) and kreplach (Jewish dumplings).
