60 years ago, a milkman-turned-bodybuilder introduced a fictional British secret agent to the world with the flick of a lighter and three immortal words – “Bond… James Bond” – and the rest is history.
007’s very first on-screen adventure sees Bond (Sean Connery) sent on assignment to Jamaica to solve the mysterious murder of a fellow agent. With the help of CIA agent Felix Leiter (Jack Lord) and local fisherman Quarrel (John Kitzmiller), he survives assassins and double-crossing femme fatales, eventually following the trail of death and destruction to the island lair of the sinister Dr. No (Joseph Wiseman).
It’s hard to believe that a series as big as Bond began as a low-budget thriller which most Hollywood studios rejected, but this is where it all began. Notably, this is the film that introduces many elements – from the opening gunbarrel sequence to Monty Norman’s iconic theme – which continue to be hallmarks of the series 25 films and six decades later.
