After his wife is killed in a train accident, Markus (Mads Mikkelsen), a highly trained soldier who was recently deployed overseas, returns to Denmark to care for his teenage daughter Mathilde (Andrea Heick Gadeberg). Then Otto (Nikolaj Lie Kaas), a statistician who was also on the train, turns up at his door claiming the train crash was not an accident at all, but in fact caused by a local gang targeting a witness in an upcoming trial. Accompanied by Otto and two of his equally nerdy and neurotic friends, Markus sets out to avenge his wife.
Although there’s plenty of action and bullets (with a plotline that initially resembles the recent oeuvre of one Mr. Liam Neeson), Riders of Justice is a darkly humorous and surprisingly humane film about ordinary people trying to make sense of the painful and nonsensical events in their lives. It’s also a lot of fun.
