In 1925, the wealthy Burbank brothers make a pit stop at a restaurant during a cattle drive. There, kind-hearted younger brother George (Jesse Plemons) meets widowed proprietress Rose (Kristen Dunst) and her teenage son, Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee).
George is immediately smitten, and it’s not long before he and Rose are married and she moves onto the Burbank ranch with him. Suspect of her intentions, domineering older brother Phil (Benedict Cumberbatch) makes it his mission to wage a covert war of intimidation against his brother’s new wife. Much to everyone’s surprise, however, he decides to take impressionable young Peter under his wing. Could Phil finally be softening or is there something more malicious at play?
Kiwi director Jane Campion’s latest is an exquisitely crafted revisionist Western that is without a doubt one of the best films of 2021. With a leading 12 nominations at this year’s Oscars, it is notably the most Oscar-nominated Australian/New Zealand production in history too – and rightfully so!
