1943 was a major turning point for the Allies in the Second World War and included an early agreement on the attack of Sicily. To successfully implement such an attack, however, the occupying German forces would have to be deceived into moving out of the area.
Operation Mincemeat is based on this deception operation: two intelligence officers (Colin Firth, Matthew MacFadyen) conceive a plan to trick the Nazis into believing the Allies were planning to attack southern Europe by way of Greece. To do this, the body of a deceased man was disguised as a British officer and equipped with fake and misleading papers. With the body dropped off the coast of Spain, the bait was laid. Was their meticulous planning enough to trick the enemy?
Directed by John Madden (Shakespeare in Love), Operation Mincemeat is a wryly entertaining slice of wartime espionage supported by an excellent ensemble cast.
