In 1941, with Paris now occupied by German forces, all members of the Jewish community are instructed to come forward and identify themselves. Fearing the worst, dedicated jeweller Joseph Haffmann (Daniel Auteuil) arranges for his family to flee the city and offers his long-time employee François (Gilles Lellouche) the chance to take over his store until the conflict subsides.
It’s a risky proposition for both men, and one that François’s wife (Sara Giraudeau) is initially sceptical of. But just as the couple move into their former employer’s home, Haffman’s attempts at escape are thwarted and he now finds himself at François’s mercy. Will he do the right thing?
A morally complex and gripping thriller, this masterpiece is French filmmaking at its finest, with terrific performances and an unexpected conclusion that will stay with you for a long time.
