After Yang is set in a near future where people can be cloned and families can purchase androids as “siblings”. Yang (Justin H. Min) is an android that Jake (Colin Farrell) and Kyra (Jodie Turner-Smith) bought to teach their adopted daughter about her Chinese culture, and who has now become an integral part of their family. So when Yang suddenly stops working, Jake frantically searches for a way to repair him. In the process, Jake comes to question both his own ability to connect with others and the limits of the connections that can be forged between androids and humans.

Director Kogonada is better known for his insightful video essays on influential directors, and After Yang is only his second feature film. It is beautifully filmed with a meditative quality and thoughtful characterisations.
