Esther (Nathalie Baye) is the head seamstress at Dior’s Avenue Montaigne workshop in Paris, a woman with no patience for the sensitivities of others. She’s about to retire after devoting decades of her life to her job, but has little to show for it.
Her life changes unexpectedly, however, when her handbag is stolen in the subway. Resigned to never seeing the bag or its contents again, she is relieved – and outraged – when the marginalised, 20-year-old thief, Jade (Lyna Khoudri), shows up at the workshop to return it. Her curiosity peaked by this unexpected act of remorse, Esther sees an opportunity to pass on her skills and decides to give the girl a break by offering her an internship at the Dior workshop.
It may be a tad predictable, but this sharp, funny French comedy is buoyed by the endearing performances of its two leads and its warts-and-all look at the life of a seamstress.
