At their remote island home along Croatia’s Adriatic coast, the relationship between restless teenager Julija (Gracija Filipovic), and her overbearing father Ante (Leon Lucev) becomes even more strained when they are visited by a wealthy, old family friend (Cliff Curtis). While Ante is attempting to broker a business deal that could be life-changing for his family, for Julija the influential visitor offers a tempting taste of liberation and desire.
Murina is Croatian filmmaker Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović impressive directorial debut, winning her the Camera d’Or at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. Mentored by executive producer Martin Scorsese, Kusijanovic deftly milks the tensions between a frustrated teenage girl, her oppressive father, and the suave stranger who comes between them in this darkly sensual mix of sunshine noir and coming-of-age story.
Fun fact: Murina is Croatian for moray eel.
