Set in 1981, this multi-award-winning film tells the story of a young girl, Cáit (newcomer Catherine Clinch), who is sent away for the summer from her dysfunctional family to live with "her mother's people", a middle-aged couple she has never met. Slowly, in their care, Cáit blossoms and discovers a new way of living, but in this house where affection grows and there are meant to be no secrets, she discovers one.
The Quiet Girl is a delicate coming-of-age story full of details about childhood, grief, parenthood and rebuilding a family. The very strong narrative – impressively and entirely portrayed in Gaelic – is combined with stunning cinematography, creating a uniquely Irish film that has become one of the most acclaimed of the year.

On the surface, The Humans is a film about the Blake family gathering to celebrate Thanksgiving in their daughter’s dilapidated Manhattan apartment. As the evening progresses and darkness falls, however, things take a turn for the worse with the family drama becoming infused with an oppressive and otherworldly sense of impending doom. All is not as it seems.
The feature debut from writer-director Stephen Karam, adapted from his own Tony Award winning Broadway play, could easily be classed as a horror film – of the psychological variety. There are no monsters, ghosts or demons, but every frame feels haunted, even as the family’s misery often gives way to heartbreaking hilarity. Starring an ensemble cast of superb character actors – Richard Jenkins, Amy Schumer, Steven Yeun, Beanie Feldstein, June Squibb and Jayne Houdyshell – this is one dinner you’ll want to save the date for.
