In 1402, Queen Margrete (Trine Dryholm) has done the impossible and brought together Denmark, Sweden and Norway into a peaceful Kalmar Union. But being a woman, Margrete is forbidden from the throne, so rules indirectly through her adopted son, Erik (Morte Hee Andersen).
With enemies seeking to disrupt the precarious alliance, Margrete seeks to fortify her position by arranging Erik’s marriage to Princess Philippa of England, daughter of King Henry IV. But drama erupts when a man (Jakob Oftebro) claiming to be Margrete’s long-dead biological son returns to lay claim to the throne – and leaving Margrete questioning who and what to believe, and where her alliances truly lie.
The most expensive production in Danish film history, and winner of multiple awards at the 2022 Danish Film Awards, Margrete: Queen of the North is a visually impressive and compelling part of Scandinavian history that you never knew you should know about!
