Part documentary, part concert film, Wash My Soul in the River’s Flow is a profound celebration of the love, lives and voices – literally and figuratively – of Indigenous musicians Archie Roach and Ruby Hunter, who passed away in 2022 and 2010, respectively.
The film tracks the couple as they prepare and perform their Kura Tunga – Songs from the River concert in 2004, alongside Paul Grabowsky and the 22-piece Australian Art Orchestra. Combining footage of conversations, rehearsals, and the opening night, alongside breathtaking images of Hunter’s Ngarrindjeri country in South Australia, this is as much a portrait of two artists at their peak as it is a profoundly moving story of loss, love and what it means to truly come ‘home’.

This poignant anthology draws together ten Indigenous Australian, Māori and South Pacific Islander filmmakers to offer their response to the 250th anniversary Second voyage of James Cook to Australia in 1772. Each examining the impact of settler colonialism on the region’s indigenous cultures, the eight interwoven tales run the gamut from animation to war stories to rom-coms. Some of these stories reach into the past – from the 19th century Māori communities and the trenches of Gallipoli during World War I – while others explore a speculative future.
A strident reminder of the resilience of our First Nations people in the face of colonialism, We Are Still Here is a thrilling statement and a memorable cinematic achievement.
