Still coming to terms with her mother’s death, teenager Mia (Sophie Wilde) finally concedes to let her best friend (Alexandra Jensen) drag her along to a party to cheer her up. Much to her surprise, she discovers that the partygoers aren’t getting their kicks from alcohol, drugs or sex – but by using the embalmed hand of a dead medium to conjure spirits. Using the hand, they can invite spirits to possess their bodies, provided it’s not for more than 90 seconds or the supernatural occupant may stick around for good. Things get dangerous, however, when the group decide to tempt fate by exceeding the limit.
Directed by Australian twin brothers Danny and Michael Philippou of RackaRacka fame, this terrifically creepy horror yarn offers up a gripping story alongside a sly critique of modern youth culture. Hands down (pun fully intended), Talk to Me is one of the best horror films of the year.
