Since the age of six, for reasons unknown, Ada McGrath (Holly Hunter) has elected to be mute. She communicates only by playing the piano and sign language, with her spirited young daughter, Flora (Anna Paquin), acting as her interpreter. When she is sold by her father into marriage, Ada, Flora and their prized piano are sent from Scotland to the wilderness of New Zealand. Once there, she finds herself locked in a battle of wills with both her controlling new husband (Sam Neill) and a rugged frontiersman (Harvey Keitel) to whom she develops a forbidden attraction.
A critical and commercial success upon its release in 1993, The Piano went on to win three Oscars, for Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Screenplay. Don’t miss your chance to revisit – or discover for the first time – director Jane Campion’s landmark film as it celebrates its 30th anniversary.
