In the late 19th century, an idealistic young Danish priest named Lucas (Elliot Crosset Hove) is tasked with travelling to a remote corner of Iceland – then part of Denmark’s empire – to establish a new church. Bringing a camera with him to document his journey, he makes the arduous trip accompanied by a group of distrusting Icelanders with his translator (Hilmar Guðjónsson) as his only ally. But the deeper they travel into the unforgiving landscape, the more Lucas finds himself straying from his purpose and mission, with shocking repercussions.
Godland is the acclaimed and much anticipated follow-up to Icelandic writer-director Hlynur Pálmason’s 2019 breakout hit, A White, White Day. Sharing a spirituality with films like Roland Joffé’s The Mission or Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood, this is an absorbing mediation on mortality and purpose that unfolds in unexpected, haunting and brilliant fashion.
