PRESENTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE NEW ZEALAND HIGH COMMISSION
Growing up in New Zealand in 1981 as a mixed-race 17-year-old, Josh Waaka (Julian Dennison) has always been torn between two worlds. When he’s not at home with his harried single mum (Minnie Driver), he attends a Catholic boy’s school, where he is a magnet for racist bullies.
Things get much worse when the South African Springboks rugby team arrives for a tour, sparking nationwide protests against their country’s apartheid regime. Inspired by the protests and a newfound passion for performing, Josh realises he can no longer sit on the fence and sets out to embrace his Māori heritage to the fullest.
A moving comedy about finding your place in the world, Uproar has plenty of that special brand of Kiwi humour – with a generous helping of heart.
