PRESENTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE EMBASSY OF SWEDEN
After the loss of her beloved younger sister, Swedish painter Hilma af Klint experiences a spiritual awakening which propels her rising artistic career. Supported by her close circle of friends, including her artist girlfriend, she develops an unorthodox style that will eventually come to be known as abstract art and spark a movement of its own. And yet, despite her pioneering work, Hilma struggles to garner recognition in the male-dominated patriarchal art world – even decades after her death in 1944.
Celebrated director Lasse Hallström (The Cider House Rules, Chocolat) takes a break from Hollywood to return to his native Sweden for this family affair: his wife and daughter both play Hilma at varying ages, in this lush and engrossing biopic about the enigmatic life of a woman well ahead of her time.
