In 1977, during her final days, famed opera singer Maria Callas (Angelina Jolie) retreats to Paris. There she reflects on her life: from her childhood in America being raised by Greek immigrant parents to her glamorous yet tumultuous time in the public eye, beguiling the opera world with her powerful voice and dramatic private life.

Following Jackie and Spencer, Chilean director Pablo Larraín appears to be creating his own sub-genre of sumptuous psychological portraits of 20th century women. Fortunately, Maria is in good company, offering a captivating, intimate exploration of fame’s allure and agonies. Jolie has never been better, bringing to life the emotional depth and complexity of the legendary diva – fragile yet formidable – in a riveting, commanding performance.
