PRESENTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE EMBASSY OF IRELAND
In 2017, a Belfast music teacher (JJ Ó Dochartaigh) crashes into the orbit of two drug-dealing childhood friends (Liam Óg Ó Hannaidh, Naoise Ó Cairealláin) when he is called in to act as an Irish-language translator during a police interrogation. Discovering their penchant for politically charged rhymes, he encourages the pair to start rapping and, together, they form a wildly inventive hip-hop group – becoming unlikely leaders in a civil rights movement to save their country’s native tongue.
Based on a “mostly true” origin story and with the titular rap trio playing themselves, Kneecap is likely to be one of the most rollicking and original biopics you’ll ever see (sorry, Robbie Williams). It’s a heartfelt celebration of language, cultural identity and the power of music, all delivered with riotous irreverence.
