Marvel Studios assembles an unconventional team of anti-heroes in Thunderbolts*, which brings together familiar faces from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko). Trapped in a dangerous situation orchestrated by shady CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), these disillusioned cast-offs are forced to put aside their differences and embark on a perilous mission that will confront the darkest corners of their pasts.

It may be hard to believe but the 36th film in the MCU proves to be a breath of fresh air, setting aside broader narrative continuity for a gritty, fun and surprisingly emotional character-driven tale of dysfunctional individuals seeking redemption. Who needs the Avengers when you’ve got ‘heroes’ like these?
