Eschewing international borders and traditional narratives, Universal Language is an absurdist comedy that channels the spirit of 1980s Iranian cinema by way of wintry suburban Canada. Set in a surreal interzone between Tehran and Winnipeg, the film follows the lives of eccentric characters as their paths intertwine in unexpected ways. From two schoolgirls discovering money frozen in ice to a tour guide shepherding confused tourists and a disillusioned government worker returning home, the kaleidoscopic narrative is filled with whimsical yet profound moments reminiscent of a Wes Anderson production.
Director Matthew Rankin’s distinctive visual style uses diorama-like compositions and a blend of Persian and French languages to create a world that is both disorienting and charming. Winner of multiple awards, including the Audience Award at the Cannes Directors' Fortnight, this is a truly unique cinematic experience.
