In the 1950s, Marty Mauser (Timothée Chalamet) is a charismatic and fiercely competitive table tennis player from Manhattan driven to become a world champion. As Marty hustles his way through the professional circuit, he must navigate a high-stakes world of ego and obsession, where every win comes with a heavy personal price. His journey is complicated by a tumultuous affair with a retired actress (Gwyneth Paltrow) and run-ins with colourful underworld characters as he attempts to turn a niche hobby into a global sensation.
Loosely inspired by the life of legendary hustler Marty Reisman, this is a kinetic and wildly original sports dramedy with a fearless performance from Chalamet unlike anything he’s ever done. Director Josh Safdie brings his trademark kinetic energy in his first solo venture without his brother Benny, assembling a daringly eclectic cast, including Paltrow, Tyler the Creator, Fran Drescher and real-life businessman Kevin O'Leary. Never has table tennis been this exciting!
Nominated for nine Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor.
