Filmmaker Hannah (Olivia Colman) embarks on a journey from Adelaide to Amsterdam to visit her gay activist father, Jim (John Lithgow), accompanied by her non-binary teen, Frances (Aud Mason-Hyde). While the trip is intended as a family reunion, tensions flare when Frances reveals a desire to stay in the progressive city for a year to live with their grandfather, whom they affectionately call ‘Jimpa’. Hannah is forced to confront her own parenting anxieties and her complicated history as long-held family secrets emerge, and the trio must navigate their shifting identities and the bonds of unconditional love.

Writer-director Sophie Hyde (Animals, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande) drew inspiration from her own complicated family dynamics for this moving drama, even going as far as casting her own child in the role of Frances. The result is a triumphant film which celebrates the courage required to be one’s authentic self with wit and warmth, buoyed by powerful performances from acting heavyweights Colman and Lithgow.
