After nineteen years of hard labour, paroled convict Jean Valjean (Grégory Gadebois) arrives in Digne, embittered and hardened by systemic cruelty. His path crosses with the saintly Bishop Myriel (Bernard Campan), whose extraordinary act of forgiveness following a theft shatters Valjean’s world view. The film then follows Valjean’s internal struggle as he discards his identity as a criminal to embrace a life of virtue, setting the stage for his eventual transformation into a benevolent benefactor.
Directed by Éric Besnard, this intimate French historical drama focuses on a pivotal part of Victor Hugo’s literary masterpiece, Les Misérables, and in doing so eschews the sprawling scale of typical adaptations to provide a nuanced, character-driven study. Featuring a powerful French cast including Isabelle Carré and Alexandra Lamy, the production has been celebrated for its period authenticity and emotional depth. Jean Valjean offers a refreshing and grounded take on a classic tale, focusing on the quiet, spiritual revolution of a single man’s soul.
