PRESENTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE EMBASSY OF LATVIA
Devoted couple Ernests (Jānis Jarāns) and Alvīne (Indra Burkovska) are veteran postal workers who have spent decades dreaming of a grand Italian holiday. When they finally win a trip to Rome through a clever scheme, it seems their lifelong wish is within reach. However, their joy is overshadowed by Alvīne's rapidly progressing Alzheimer's disease, a reality they both desperately try to ignore. As they prepare for departure, Ernests must navigate his evolving role as a caregiver, desperately trying to preserve their shared memories while the woman he loves begins to slip away into the fog of her condition.
Directed by Elza Gauja, this bittersweet Latvian comedy-drama offers a poignant and deeply human look at the struggle against forgetting. In addition to winning Best Feature at the Latvian National Film Awards, A Postcard from Rome has won the hearts of audiences and critics alike for its delicate balance of humour and heartbreak – proving that even as the mind falters, the heart remains a steadfast compass towards the things that matter most.
