Global pop icon Mother Mary (Anne Hathaway) is at a volatile turning point in her career. Following a traumatic onstage accident that many suspect was more than just a mishap, she retreats from the spotlight to the quiet of the English countryside. There, she seeks out her estranged former creative partner and costume designer, Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel), hoping to commission a dress for her high-stakes comeback performance. Over the course of three intense days in Sam's barn-turned-workshop, the two women are forced to confront the deep-seated resentments, ghostly visions, and mutual traumas that ended their partnership.
This ambitious musical melodrama directed by David Lowery (The Green Knight, A Ghost Story) features a surrealist edge, blending intimate character study with haunting, spectral imagery. Alongside songs co-written by FKA Twigs and Jack Antonoff, Mother Mary offers up a raw exploration of fame and the price of artistic perfection, anchored by a powerhouse two-hander performance between its leads.
