Congratulations to all of this year’s Oscar winners! It certainly was a memorable ceremony to say the least, with LA LA… erm, MOONLIGHT winning Best Picture and LA LA LAND taking home the most awards of the night.
But the real winners are all of you – because we’ve got BOTH of those films screening this week alongside even more winners and nominees. You won’t want to miss Oscar Week at the ANU Film Group!
• Wed 1 Mar @ 7:30 PM: MOONLIGHT
The chronicle of the life of a young black man from childhood to adulthood, as he struggles to find his place in the world while growing up in a rough neighbourhood of Miami. Winner of 3 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali).

• Thu 2 Mar @ 7:30 PM: ARRIVAL
When mysterious spacecraft touch down across the globe, an elite linguist (Amy Adams) is brought in to attempt communication with the aliens. And as mankind teeters on the verge of war, she must race against time for answers. Nominated for 8 Oscars, including Best Picture. Oscar winner for Best Sound Editing.
• Fri 3 Mar @ 7:30 PM: HELL OR HIGH WATER + THE NEON DEMON
In HELL OR HIGH WATER, two brothers (Chris Pine, Ben Foster) decide to rob branches of the bank threatening to foreclose on their family land. They soon find themselves on the radar of a dogged Texas Ranger (Jeff Bridges), looking for one last grand pursuit. Nominated for 4 Oscars, including Best Picture.
Then, in THE NEON DEMON (at approx. 9:15 PM), a young aspiring model (Elle Fanning) moves to Los Angeles to pursue a career but soon finds her youth and vitality devoured by a group of beauty-obsessed women who will stop at nothing to get what she has. Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn (DRIVE).
• Sat 4 Mar @ **7 PM**: LA LA LAND + CAFÉ SOCIETY
In LA LA LAND, an aspiring actress (Emma Stone) falls in love with a jazz musician (Ryan Gosling), but as success mounts they are faced with decisions that begin to fray their relationship and the dreams they’ve worked so hard to maintain. Winner of 6 Oscars, including Best Director and Best Actress (Emma Stone).
Then, in Woody Allen’s CAFÉ SOCIETY (at approx. 9:15 PM), a young New Yorker (Jesse Eisenberg) moves to Hollywood where he falls in love with the secretary (Kristen Stewart) of his powerful uncle (Steve Carell). But his carefree existence is shattered when he discovers that she might have another lover.

The ANU Film Group’s Annual General Meeting is your window into the inner workings of your favourite Film Group – find out what goes on behind the scenes, hear our exciting plans for the future, and ask us questions.
It’s also an opportunity for you to get in on the action, as the AGM is where we appoint the Film Group’s new committee.
Committee roles are many and varied and include working front of house, film selection, promotion and community engagement, and pretty much any aspect that helps us run. We’d love to see some new faces – no experience necessary, just a willingness to commit a bit of time to help us continue being the awesome film society that you know and love.
