WHAT’S ON THIS WEEK
................................................................

Last week was a very busy one, so we’d like to take this opportunity to remind members and their invited guests that sitting on the stairs or in walkways during a film is NOT permitted under any circumstances. It is a tripping hazard in the dark and can prove dangerous for you and others, especially in the event of an emergency.

We keep a count of how many people are in the theatre and will only allow you to enter if there are still seats available. So if you anticipate the film to be busy or have certain seating preferences, we do recommend that you come along early to avoid disappointment.

This week, we screen Gary Oldman’s Best Actor Oscar-winning performance, a true life thriller about the kidnapping of J. Paul Getty III, a look at a year in the life of former NZ PM Helen Clark, an inventive horror film that is GROUNDHOG DAY meets SCREAM, and Michael Fassbender in a serial killer thriller that is a mystery in more ways than one.

• WED 14 MAR @ 7:30 PM: MY YEAR WITH HELEN (PG, 93 min)

A behind-the-scenes look at a year in the life of former New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark as she campaigns against the odds to be the first female Secretary-General of the United Nations, all while looking after her family back home.

** Presented in partnership with the New Zealand High Commission **

• THU 15 MAR @ 7:30 PM: ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD (MA, 132 min)

When her teenage son is kidnapped, a devoted mother (Michelle Williams) must try to convince his billionaire grandfather, J. Paul Getty (Christopher Plummer), to pay the ransom. Directed by Ridley Scott and also starring Mark Wahlberg. Oscar nominee for Best Supporting Actor (Plummer).

• FRI 16 MAR @ 7:30 PM: DARKEST HOUR (PG, 125 min) + HAPPY DEATH DAY (M, 96 min)

In DARKEST HOUR, the fate of Europe in the early days of WWII hangs on the newly-appointed British Prime Minister Winston Churchill (Gary Oldman), as he decides whether to negotiate with Nazi Germany or fight on against incredible odds. Oscar winner for Best Actor (Oldman).

Then, in HAPPY DEATH DAY (at approx. 9:45 PM), a teenager must relive the day of her murder over and over again, dying in a different way each time, in a time loop that will end only when she is able to uncover the identity of her killer.

• SAT 17 MAR @ **7 PM**: PHANTOM THREAD (M, 130 min) + THE SNOWMAN (MA, 119 min)

In PHANTOM THREAD, a renowned dressmaker and perennial bachelor (Daniel Day-Lewis) in 1950s London finds his carefully tailored life disrupted by a young, strong-willed woman who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover. Oscar winner for Best Costume Design.

** Presented in partnership with the ANU Fashion and Beauty Society **

Then, in THE SNOWMAN (at approx. 9:15 PM), when a troubled detective (Michael Fassbender) uncovers a string of gruesome murders where the killer leaves a snowman as a calling card, he must delve into the past and a decades-old cold case to make a connection before the killer strikes again.

................................................................

We have tickets to give away to two exciting new films being released in cinemas this month, and all you have to do to win is tell us which one you’d like to see!

MARY MAGDALENE is set in the Holy Land when young Mary (Rooney Mara) leaves her traditional family behind to join a new social movement headed by the charismatic Jesus of Nazareth (Joaquin Phoenix). As the notoriety of the group spreads and more are drawn to follow Jesus’ inspirational message, Mary’s spiritual journey places her at the heart of a story that will lead to Jerusalem, where she must confront the reality of Jesus’ destiny and her own place within it.

Directed by Garth Davis (LION), MARY MAGDALENE is released in cinemas from March 22. Thanks to Transmission Films, we have 10 in-season double passes to give away.

HUMAN FLOW is an epic documentary from renowned Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei, which examines the migration of over 65 million people around the world who have been forced from their homes to escape famine, climate change and war, in the greatest human displacement since World War II. The documentary explores both the staggering scale of the refugee crisis and its profoundly personal human impact in 23 countries over the course of one eventful year.

HUMAN FLOW is released in cinemas from March 15, and we have 10 in-season passes to give away thanks to Roadshow Entertainment.
