If trivia nights were award shows, then our Annual Trivia Night would definitely be the Oscars of trivia nights!
Glitzy, glam (that’s just the wait staff) and chock-full of prizes worth way more than a golden statue of a naked man, this is our primary fundraising event for the year. As a not-for-profit society which relies on membership fees to keep going, your support would be greatly appreciated. Anyone is welcome to attend – you don’t need to be a member.
In return for attending, you will get a trivia night that is unlike any other. We spend months coming up with the questions and use a unique mix of audio-visual and traditional questions, as well as individual, group and creative rounds, to keep you thoroughly entertained.

In the highly acclaimed horror-thriller GET OUT, an African American man is finally going to meet his Caucasian girlfriend’s parents, but soon discovers that their friendly and polite demeanour masks an unimaginable nightmare.
Then, in THE WIZ (at approx. 9:15 PM), a young woman stranded in a mysterious land seeks the assistance of a wizard to get home, in this urban re-imagining of The Wizard of Oz. Starring Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and Richard Pryor.

In JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 2, a legendary retired assassin (Keanu Reeves) is compelled by an Italian gangster to repay a past favour. He reluctantly travels to Rome where he discovers that a large bounty has been put on his life.
Then, in cult classic ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK (at approx. 9:15 PM), a convict (Kurt Russell) is sent in to rescue the President after his plane crashes on the island of Manhattan, now serving as a maximum security prison in futuristic 1997.

Join the ANU Film Group in rolling out our new Semester Two 2017 programme tonight (Monday 17 July) with a free screening of the action-packed sci-fi blockbuster TRANSFORMERS: THE LAST KNIGHT at 7:30 PM.
In director Michael Bay’s epic fifth instalment in the series (don’t worry – you needn’t have seen the others), the humans and Transformers are at war. Seeking a way to end the conflict, an inventor (Mark Wahlberg) forms an unlikely alliance with an English historian (Anthony Hopkins) to uncover the hidden history of Transformers on Earth – and discover that the key to saving the future may lie in the secrets of the past.
Our wonderful canteen run by the Rotary Club of Woden Daybreak will also be open at tonight’s screening, providing their usual assortment of popcorn, snacks and drinks – with all proceeds going to charity. So you can have your favourite movie snack and feel good about yourself while doing so too.

Our inaugural Best Foreign Language Film Festival closes tonight with Spain’s entry – JULIETA – directed by Pedro Almodóvar. The screening will be introduced by Professor Alfredo Martínez-Expósito, a Spanish film expert from the University of Melbourne, and will be followed by light refreshments and drinks courtesy of the Embassy of Spain!
Then, we finish up Semester One with a double feature of familial treachery: Guy Ritchie’s action-packed KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD, followed by British gangster drama TRESPASS AGAINST US, starring Michael Fassbender and Brendan Gleeson.

Thanks to Transmission Films, we’ve got tickets to give away to MONSIEUR CHOCOLAT, the fascinating French drama that has taken France’s box office by storm.
During the late 1800s, a former slave named Chocolat (Omar Sy, THE INTOUCHABLES) makes a living playing a cannibal in a provincial French circus. While there, he impresses established performer George Footit (real-life circus performer James Thierrée), who takes him under his wing. Together, they develop a routine which catapults them to stardom, glamour and riches. But the satisfaction of success can only last so long as Chocolat’s desire for equality begins to take hold.

Continuing our Best Foreign Language Film Festival this week is Austria's submission to the category at this year’s Oscars. Plus, an iconic Australian coming-of-age novel brought to life, and Adam Driver in American indie director Jim Jarmusch’s latest.
• Fri 16 June @ 7:30 PM: STEFAN ZWEIG: FAREWELL TO EUROPE
In 1936, illustrious author Stefan Zweig – one of the most-read authors of the 20th century – leaves Austria for South America. Being Jewish and hating the inhumanity that prevails in Germany, he struggles to understand the events in war torn Europe as he searches for a new home amidst the political turmoil.

JASPER JONES tells the coming-of-age tale of Charlie Bucktin (Levi Miller), who finds his life changed forever when his small town’s mixed-race outcast – Jasper Jones (Aaron McGrath) – shows him a dead body of a young girl. Believing Jasper to be innocent, he sets out to find the true killer amidst dangerous racial tensions in 1960s Australia. Also starring Toni Collette and Hugo Weaving.
Then, in PATERSON (at approx. 8:45 PM), a bus driver named Paterson (Adam Driver) in the city of Paterson, New Jersey adheres to a simple routine each day. But his outlook on life gradually begins to change when he discovers the poetry evident in the smallest details, triumphs and defeats of daily life. Directed by Jim Jarmusch (ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE, DEAD MAN).
After getting off to a great start last week, our inaugural Best Foreign Language Film festival continues with a riotous entry from Greece. Plus, a double feature of dramas about forbidden love in two very different times and settings.

This multi-award-winning Greek comedy follows six men stranded on a yacht in the Aegean Sea who decided to play an increasingly-absurd game of one-upmanship to prove their masculinity in this scathing unpicking of manhood. Greece’s submission to the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 2017 Oscars.

In MAHANA, two Māori sheep-shearing families on the rural East coast of New Zealand are sworn enemies battling for supremacy in the 1960s. But when the youngest son of the Mahana family sets out to unravel the truth behind the longstanding feud, he inadvertently risks the fragile cohesion of their tight-knit society. Directed by Lee Tamahori (ONCE WERE WARRIORS).
Then, in LOVING (at approx. 8:45 PM), discover the true story of Richard and Mildred Loving (Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga) who were arrested for their interracial marriage in 1960s Virginia, leading to a legal challenge that would go all the way to the Supreme Court. SCREENING CHANGE: 'WONDER WOMAN' + 'THE CIRCLE' ON SATURDAY 15 JULY

Due to a last-minute change in its availability, we regret to inform you that WONDER WOMAN can no longer be screened as scheduled on Saturday 15 July. The night’s second film, THE CIRCLE, is unfortunately also no longer available due to its Australian theatrical release date being pushed back to late July.
In their place, we will instead be screening two new films: KING: ARTHUR LEGEND OF THE SWORD followed by TRESPASS AGAINST US.
KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD puts an action-packed and epic new spin on the medieval legend, in which Arthur (Charlie Hunnam) is robbed of his birth right by his uncle (Jude Law) and raised on the streets of London. WANT TO WRITE REVIEWS FOR SEMESTER TWO?

Much like the running of the ANUFG itself, the film reviews in our members’ booklets and on our website each semester are contributed solely by volunteers. And we’re now on the lookout for people to contribute reviews for our upcoming Semester Two 2017 programme.
Reviews will need to be between 200 and 250 words in length and must be completed over a period of about a week in mid-June. This is a tight turnaround, so please only volunteer if you are able to complete them in this time.
If successful, volunteers will be then sent a list of films from which they can nominate ones they’d like to write reviews for. You’re welcome to write just one review or as many as you’d like, but please note that:
1. We do not provide reviewers with payment or a copy of films.
2. Some of the films we are seeking reviews/previews for have not been released yet, and some creativity/research may be required.
3. Unsolicited reviews will not be accepted.

• Fri 2 June, 7:30 PM: TONI ERDMANN (Germany)
Heralded by many as the best film of 2016, this unconventional and highly acclaimed Germany comedy follows an eccentric father who creates an alter ego as a life coach to reconnect with his estranged, busy daughter.
• Fri 9 June, 7:30 PM: CHEVALIER (Greece)

The opening film of our Best Foreign Language Film Festival – and soon-to-be recipient of a Hollywood remake starring Jack Nicholson – kicks off the week. Plus, the year’s highest-grossing film at the worldwide box office to date, and an inspirational chess drama!
Please also note that, due to the running time of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST on Saturday 3 June, the night’s second film – QUEEN OF KATWE – will only begin at 7:30 PM and not 7 PM as initially advertised.

In the opening night film of our inaugural Best Foreign Language Film Festival, an eccentric father decides to reconnect with his estranged and hard-working adult daughter by adopting an alter ego and posing as a life coach.
• Sat 3 June @ **5 PM**: BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (2017)
In Disney’s hit live-action remake of their beloved animated film, a young woman (Emma Watson) is taken prisoner by a Beast in his castle in exchange for the freedom of her father. Despite her fears, she befriends the castle’s enchanted staff and learns to look beyond the Beast’s exterior to recognise the human within.

In this inspirational drama, a young girl selling corn on the streets of Uganda finds her world changed forever when she is introduced to the game of chess and goes on to pursues her dream of becoming an international chess champion. Starring David Oyelowo and Lupita Nyong'o.
